How does diet and lifestyle affect health?

People often ask us at the clinic,
"How come with all this research and knowledge on diet, exercise and how to keep healthy, why does everyone still seems to get as sick and injured as ever...?"
This is a complicated question and a very important point - why is society still just as sick despite all the advances in modern technology and ways of thinking?

One of my many teachers, Paul Chek www.paulcheksblog.com, provides some excellent insight into why as a society we have arrived at this situation. His researchers have found studies that show since the advent of the microscope, human health on the whole has declined. Modern medical professionals have techniques to analyse and test almost anything and then farm out a matching pill to "cure" the ailment. The holistic and natural way of life that has been guiding us for hundreds of thousands of years is sadly being lost in translation.

There are more doctors, nutritionists, osteopaths etc per capita than ever before. The advancements in modern medical technology over the last 20 years are astounding, yet there are no tangible increments in the quality of the average persons health. We are being told that the statistics on orthopaedic problems have declined and that our health is actually better.  Is this really true? There is plenty of evidence out there to show that orthopaedic injuries have increased exponentially, and these findings completely tie in with what we as primary healthcare practitioners are seeing on a yearly, monthly, even daily basis.

Why is this?

As holistic and natural health specialists, we point towards a health care system driven by the need for a quick fix, treatment that provides an immediate response regardless whether it's the best option or not. There is no question that our healthcare system excels at emergency medicine, and there are countless people who will vouch for that, but how about the vast majority of conditions that are years, even decades in the making that could have been prevented? The symptoms are being treated, not the causative factors. Perhaps our healthcare system is responding and providing to a way that society continues to develop as generations progress...  This is a subject for another time!

How do we change and improve our health?

Our bodies are complex cellular entities, consisting of many different structures that are all interdependent on one another.  They each have their role and when one aspect of the structure isn't functioning optimally, there will be a decrease in function in the other structures, similar to a domino effect.

There are 3 requirements for our body to function optimally; Good materials (high quality foods), a good mechanic (good life management coach) and a good plan (correct exercise programme and dietary advice based on evaluation and assessment).

Whats happening with our ecosystem?

Our ecological system is a reciprocal life system that's supports us and all other living organisms, with each organism being dependent on the next.  There are 4 main constituents of this system; The soil from which all life is supported, plants, animals and humans.  The plants grow from the soil, the animals eat the plants, we eat the plants and the animals etc.

The quality of our food supply is dependent on the quality of the soil. Good quality soil is well and truly alive and kicking - did you know that in a half a teaspoon of organic soil, there are over 10 million living organisms? In conventionally farmed soils there is huge use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical fertilisers and these compounds kill off the natural bio-system that lives within the soil. It is these bio-systems that are responsible for the manufacturing of vitamins and minerals. These are then taken up by the plants and eaten by the animals and us.
The soil provides the nutrients.
The plants rely on these nutrients & absorb them
Many animals rely on these plants for their nutrients.
Humans rely on the plants and animals for nutrients.
Industrial farming methods interrupt and corrupt this natural cycle of life.  We force the soil into producing a poor level of nutrients, which produces poor quality plants, the animals eat these poor quality plants which produces poor quality meat, humans eat poor quality plants and poor quality meats, leading to sub-optimal conditions within the human body. This is before we have put "non-foods" into our diets, foods that provide NO nutritional input that we eat on a daily basis.

In order for your body to function optimally, it is clear that the energy sources you put into your body must be optimal. The body can only use what you put into it. If you are feeding yourself fast foods or microwave meals on a regular basis, if organic fresh vegetables and fruit are few and far between, there is little chance that your body can function optimally and disease may ensue.

If you are building a house, and you use poor materials to build that house, what will happen to the house? The house will eventually breakdown and collapse. You can use the best nails and screws (vitamins and mineral supplements) to support it, but if the raw material you use is of a poor quality, it doesn't matter how good these nails and screws are. Your body is like that house. Build your body from the best materials and it will not breakdown or collapse and you will get the best out of it.
